چکیده

OpenStreetMap offers an underexplored source of worldwide geospatial data useful to urban researchers. This study uses the OSMnx software to automatically download and analyze 27,009 US street networks from OpenStreetMap at metropolitan, municipal, and neighborhood scales—namely, every US city and town (N = 19655), census urbanized area (N = 497), and Zillow-defined neighborhood (N = 6857). It presents wide-ranging empirical findings on US urban form and street network characteristics, emphasizing measures relevant to graph theory, urban design, and morphology such as structure, connectedness, density, centrality, and resilience. In the past, street network data acquisition and processing has been challenging and ad hoc. This study illustrates the use of OSMnx and OpenStreetMap to consistently conduct street network analysis with extremely large sample sizes, with clearly defined network definitions and extents for reproducibility, and using nonplanar, directed graphs. These street networks and measures data sets have been shared in a public repository for other researchers to use. ∗This manuscript is currently under peer review; for the latest version see http://geoffboeing.com/publications/ †Email address: [email protected]; corresponding author. 1 ar X iv :1 70 5. 02 19 8v 1 [ cs .S I] 2 9 M ar 2 01 7

Topological analysis of urban street networks

The authors propose a topological analysis of large urban street networks based on a computational and functional graph representation. This representation gives a functional view in which vertices represent named streets and edges represent street intersections. A range of graph measures, including street connectivity, average path length, and clustering coefficient, are computed for structura...

A study on the effect of urban blocks order on the environment perception in historical texture (Chahar-Bagh Street) compared with the renewed one (Foulad-Shahr City Center)

The environment meaning is one of the components in the city image that is formed under the influence of human factors and the artifact environment. So far, many research studies were performed on the impact of the artifact environment components on the environment meaning. But what is ignored and not studied is the order imposed on urban blocks. urban blocks are investigated in diverse aspects...

Router deployment of Streetside Parking Sensor Networks in Urban Areas

The deployment of municipal wireless mesh networks is of vital importance to collect urban information. As the increasing parking search problem, we select the popular smart parking application and study its deployment problems. In particular, on-street parking applications require such an infrastructure for enabling large scale system at reasonable costs. Current existing smart parking project...

Sustainable urban development through complete street policy implementation

Nowadays, the expansion of the cities is an inevitable necessity; increasing the dependence of the citizens on motor vehicles and, consequently, making development of the transportation networks a necessity rather than an option. Thus, increasing car ownership and car use has created many problems for the cities, such as increasing greenhouse gas emissions, environmental pollution, casualties o...

A topological pattern of urban street networks: Universality and peculiarity

In this paper, we derive a topological pattern of urban street networks using a large sample (the largest so far to the best of our knowledge) of 40 US cities and a few more from elsewhere of different sizes. It is found that all the topologies of urban street networks based on street–street intersection demonstrate a small world structure, and a scale-free property for both street length and c...
